Fernando made in 1950 when he started on a mission for quality, goodness and kindness to which he devoted a lifetime. Our uncompromising commitment is to offering our customers only the world’s finest Ceylon Cinnamon; grown, harvested, and perfected by artisans, with kindness to people & nature.
We fulfill our desire to be kind in all that we do through the Merrill J. Fernando Foundation (MJF Foundation) and Dilmah Conservation. We offer kindness to Nature in our efforts at restoring degraded ecosystems, conserving the biodiversity that makes Sri Lanka one of 36 biodiversity hotspots in the world.
Our commitment to kindness includes people and nature, incorporating nutrition, education, health & wellness for people living near our Ceylon Cinnamon gardens and beyond. Our focus is on empowering less fortunate youth, women and men with dignity. We fund scholarships for over 500 students each year while supporting nearly 10,000 school children with educational supplies. The MJF Foundation has established 84 child Development centers (CDCs) to support low income families and address health, nutrition and early education of children.
Dilmah Conservation has established nature corridors to strengthen the resilience of the Sinharaja Rainforest, an UNESCO World Heritage site with extraordinary species richness. Our efforts at conservation integrate livelihoods of surrounding communities. Amongst other social and economic inclusiveness, we train the community in beekeeping, to promote insect pollination while delivering economic benefit and enhancing biodiversity.
Dilmah Conservation and linked Biodiversity Sri Lanka are actively restoring mangrove forests in Kalpitya with Sri Lanka being honoured with the UN Decade of Restoration Flagship Award. Through Biodiversity Sri Lanka we are building a broad corporate coalition for environmental good to deliver change at a national level.
On the ocean floor, we have introduced low-impact aqua culture practices by engaging with 10 farmers from the town of Mannar in Nothern Sri Lanka. To cultivate seaweed for the purpose of improving the living standards of the community, utilizing the environmental opportunity of carbon sequestration & developing value added products using seaweed.
These are amongst nearly 150 humanitarian and environmental initiatives that we undertake each year in fulfillment of our commitment to kindness. For more details, have a look at the ‘Impact’ book below.
